The image-rich and programmatic music of Rameau, Marais, Forqueray, and Francois Couperin is juxtaposed with the whimsical, inventive, and sometimes comical early French films, including Georges Méliès’s Journey to the Moon.

The Repast core ensemble presents music from the late Baroque, a transitional period to the Classical Era that included experimentation with musical portrayals of emotional upheaval. From the idea of Empfindsamkeit, or heightened sensitivity, to the sudden mood swings of passionate youth, this program features daring and intimate works by Schaffrath, Platti, Benda, and C.P.E. Bach.

Repast presents this audacious and innovative 17th Century repertoire with an ensemble that includes the dulcian (the early bassoon), theorbo (a large lute), 2 violins, a portative organ, and cello. Works by Dario Castello are also included.

Tapping into the current national issues about immigration and racism, Repast presents a cultural flashback to relevant issues of encountering “the other” in musical discourse.
